Baby Tie Tutorial
Tie Tutorial
The pattern
for a bigger kid I just lengthen and widen the tie as needed.
I use fleece as interfacing for my ties it is stable and durable even after many washes. I try to use scrap or the cheepy stuff. The only thing to keep in mind is that it is not to dark or pattered that you can see it though the tie fabric. I don't follow any grain line I just use the layout that maximizes the fabric. The pattern is the size of the fleece. You have to add seam allowance when you cut out the good fabric.
here is what it looks like with the good fabric cut out. Cut 1 of each pattern piece out of fleece. Cut 2 of each pattern piece from good fabric.
You will also need a neck band. You can use what ever you want, bias tape, ribbon, or fabric. The band is not seen when the tie is on, so I usually use either white fabric to blend with a white shirt, or as shown, the same fabric as the tie. Finished it should be about 1/2" x 14".
Once your tie piece are cut out place fleece on wrong side of one piece of the face fabric and sew all the way around as shown by the doted lines on the pattern do the sane for the knot piece. This keeps the fleece in place.
when you are done it will look like this.
Now place right sides together of the tie fabric so the fleece is on top and sew close to the fleece but not on the fleece around the tie leaving the top edge open.
When I pull back the fleece you can see the stitching close to but not on the fleece.
do the same with the knot piece leaving the ends open.
Turn the two pieces right side out
now you will see the stay stitching on the back side of tie.
now press the tie.
at any point you can sew on the hook and loop but I usually do this before I assemble the tie. I cut 2 pieces of 3/4" Velcro 1/2" long and space them 1/2" apart. I usually just use a wide zig-zag stitch to secure them.
Assembling the Tie
I start by finding the center of the tie band and pinning the tie in place with a 1/4" to 1/2" fold.
The I wrap the knot part around the tie.
Pin the top edge of the knot in place at the back.
This is the tricky part and I find this take a bit of tweaking. pinch the bottom edge of the knot tight to make the triangle shape that a real tie has. pin it in place then tuck all the raw edges in.
It should then look something like this. It usually it take me 3 or 4 tries before I am happy with shape of the knot.
And from the back.
The hard part is done and all that is left is a little hand sewing. I just use a simple whip stitch to sew across the top and down the back of the tie.
I used to try to keep the stitches smaller so you could not see them but who really care it is the back.
and you are done.

New Shoe Pattern
I tried out a new shoe pattern last week. I made some modifications I added the elastic insert to the back of the shoe I was inspired by these Robeez.
These are a first try so they don't look that good but they work.

Project catch up
Last year I found a beanbag chair at the thrift store for $5. It was royal blue vinyl and torn in a few places. I planned to recover it. So finally I did it. I found a pattern at Linen Cupboard blog it worked great. I found the vinyl on sale for $3/ yard but it had a flaw so I got it for $1.50/Y. I am pleased with the results.
Catch up quilts. I usually finish baby quilts with plenty in time of time. But not this time both if these are late. Sorry Keri and Cory
I used a fun new technique for applique name it makes it stricken easy. I found it on Obsessively Stitching blog. I just used words in tested of shapes.

Fun and fast
this quilt was fun and fast with a simple pattern and a quick quilting pattern.
fast and fun baby shoes. super easy and from start to finish about 1/2 hour
let me know if you want either pattern I love to share. I also have lots of scrap leather and an industrial sewing machine that sews though leather like butter (thanks to Eric for the use of his Juki)

3 quilts this week
After almost a month of not quilting I am back at it. There are so many babies on the way right now. I sat down last week and made 10 quilt patterns. This is the first 3. my break from wilting was not a break from sewing I was busy with a dress.

I need a lift
why am I blogging about bed risers and why am I so exited? It is the application that I am exited about. I have been doing all my lay out and cutting on folding table. It is a great table but too short for standing work. When I saw this solution I knew it was for me. The risers bring the folding table from a 30" sitting height table to a 36" standing height table. No more sore back all for $8.
My fun (Christmas present) quilting frames they are Flynn frames they are great! It is in the similar vain as the big machine quilting frames that take up a hole room and cost as much as a new car but small and much cheaper. Both thing I am happy about. Can I tell you they are awesome and easy to use. Thank Eric!

The Proses

but what happens in between? I thought I would give a glimpse into the creative process. This quit was a challenge. I had a hard time with the design. The pattered fabric was chosen for me and my a friend for her grandson's quilt. It is harder to form me to be inspired by fabric i didn't chose. The other challenge is that the fabric has a pattern of squares on it. I spent an hour on the computer over a few days trying to come up with a pattern that would not fight with the squares on the pattern. When I found the pink quilt on line it just clicked, I knew it would be the perfect pattern. So I opened Auto CAD (computer drafting program) it is meant for architectural and engineering drawing but it works for quilt patterns and I worked out the geometry of the pattern and drew up the pattern.
The Pattern
After I have the pattern comes the task of figuring out how much fabric I need and what is the best layout to be efficient when I am cutting out the fabric. It start with counting all the squares in the quilt. Then how many of those can I get out of a 45" wide piece of fabric. Well it is boring to talk about, so all I will say it is tedious but necessary before I can cut out the pieces. Then come the cutting and sewing and yada yada yada you have a quilt.
